I'm dividing peony plant today - and hints or tips?
« on: August 28, 2013, 08:34 »
Hi,

I have 2 peony plants that have been in situ for probably 10 years, this year they were very leggy and I hardly got any blooms so I think it's time to lift, divide and transplant. I've read how to do this and a few you tube clips but can't embark on this job without asking the advice of you lovely people.

Any hints or tips gratefully received  :),

Thanks,

Caroline

Make sure they are not buried any deeper than they were, and be prepared for a sulk of a year or two, however you do it  :nowink:

I know many perennials need lifting and the inner part discarding for the more productive outer parts, but not sure if this applies to peonies or not. I moved one years ago and it still produced flowers the next year despite warnings in books, but see what others on here say.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thanks, just tackling a rather overgrown border so it might be tomorrow's job! And I  call myself a gardener?!

I always add some rotted manure to the planting holes, water the holes very well so the roots recover better, and then set in the divided root and fill - at the same height. If you've not had flowers for a long time or few flowers, then replant it just a bit higher than before but never too close to the surface.

Peonies are very fussy on their root height which affects blooming.

Okay - thank you - will do, now where's my spade?!

Trillium - what is the recommended root height? I may move a couple next year or this autumn.
