transition
« on: August 26, 2013, 09:52 »
Hi ! Well my 2 new girls have had their segregation from my betty - tonight they will be put in the main hen house. Im feeling a little nervous for them. Is there anything else i can do to make the transition smoother?

Thanks :)
Keep calm & talk to chickens :)

They should be fine if you put them together when they are sleepy.  I would make sure you are up early to let them out of the coop and that they have more than one feeder and drinker available.  I hope all goes well.   ;)

How long roughly will betty pecking & showing them who is boss last? She seems to be singling one chook in particular.

Thanks

For ever ! But not so frequently .
I tend to find that No1 hen will give No2 hen a hard time but pal-up with No3 hen who is no competition.

A swift peck in the head for No2 is always on the cards if the mark is overstepped ! :)
No 3 hen can often get away with more food stealing etc being a pal !

Numbers 1 and 3 will sometimes even gang up on number 2 - number 1 to keep her in her place and number 3 to move up the pecking order - though why she would want to do this after seeing how number 2 is treated is a mystery to me!!!!

As 8doubles says, they will calm down as time goes on and peace will be restored until the next new hen is introduced and it all starts again! :D
