Compost from apple pulp
« on: August 24, 2013, 00:15 »
My autumn/winter compost contains a lot of waste from the garden and kitchen but also an enormous amount of apple pulp from cider making.  It goes off like a rocket and with turning stays hot well into late December.  Generally nice friable stuff and I put it out in the veg patch by mid the following year.  I assume it is quite acidic but have never measured the pH .  The output of the last bed I have put it on seems ok and includes some brassicas.

Generally I'd like to know peoples experiences with this sort of compost ingredient.  Any thoughts and advice appreciated.

we made cider last autumn at a friends house and she did the same thing only thing she mentioned was the need to weed lots of little apple trees!

Aside from that she hasn't said much else

We freeze bushels of peeled sliced apples and have a lot of pulp as well that I throw into the compost bins. I've never noticed it particularly acidic since I also mix in other dead veg matter as well as dry leaves and shredded newspaper. The carbon of the latter helps the pile heat better and we end up with lovely stuff.

Should think it would be fine; only comment would be that it would be best not to put it all onto the compost heap in one go, if it is pretty sizeable in quantity.  Mix it with the other types of ingredients for variety.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have found that it produces lots of fruit flies if put into the compost bins. Not that fruit flies bother me it's just a bit disconcerting when you remove the bin lid and clouds of the darned things fly up.

wasps are starting on the sweet things now, so shredded paper on top might help.
