Saving seed
« on: August 23, 2013, 18:58 »
A couple of days ago, I saved some tigrella seed for next year. I like to save my own as it is very little bother and I can save seed from the best fruits, hopefully passing the "niceness" on to it's progeny. I gave them a nice swirl about just now and took the top off the the container they are in. It smelled exactly like cream of tomato soup. Luvverly.

I just picks 'em out of the chosen fruit and space them out on a bit of kitchen paper.  Left all year on top of the herb/spice shelf cutting them up just prior to planting.  Had no trouble yet. :)

Don't you find 'Tigrella' are prone to splitting ?

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I've had quite a few split, but the majority are ok.

I spoke too soon. A great many of my Tigrells are splitting. They are getting the same watering regime as my other toms which aren't splitting so I reckon they must be prone to it. Never mind, they will freeze ok.

Have you kept seed before? Did it run true?

I kept the seed from a yellow cherry variety that I liked but they've all grown red so I guess it must have crossed with something else in the greenhouse.  >:(

Did you grow your plants from hybrid/f1 seed? as they will very very rarely grow to be the same as their parents.

You need to buy varieties that don't say f1 if you want to save seeds ;)

Most of the old varieties breed true from seed  :)

No, they weren't F1.

I got them from an American site that only sells Heritage/Heirloom tomato seeds and he doesn't have any more. :(

That's unusual, cos they usually self pollinate, although of course they can cross - and also sad  :(

Yep and the problem is I took seed from three or four different tomatoes (because it was the first time I had done it and I didn't know if they'd germinate) so I suppose there's a chance that some of them might have self fertilised but I only grew a couple of plants because I like to grow lots of different sorts.

I suppose I'm going to have to grow more next year to find out if any grow true. :(
