How to grow swedes
« on: August 22, 2013, 09:18 »
Some of us seem to have difficulty growing swedes so I have started a thread to find out what works for you.

This year I have had great success.

I sowed mine in May and transplanted the seedlings into 3.5" pots  (..7cm for those who use foreign measurements.) I like this method as I don't like thinning out.

When they looked strong enough I transplanted them to an area well manured last year, but was concerned as I have a lot of club root on my plot so I put about an ounce of lime in each hole.

I expect the rain we have had this  year helped, and I watered them during dry periods.

They are now around 4" in diameter so we are eating them.

These are the best swedes I have had for around 15 years or more.
