spiky cucumber

My foot high ridge cucumber (don't know the variety) has produced a 5 inch cucumber covered in spikes.  How do I process it to eat?  shave the skin off or just the spikes?  :wacko:

You can often just rub the spikes off, if not then you'll have to peel it  ;)

Rub the spikes roughly and they will come off. Some ridge cucumber skins are quite tough, some are a little bitter. Try them and see.

The spikes get less prominent as the cucumber fills out - just ends up with some hard 'thorns' that brush off easily. I have grown Marketmore 76 this year, and the skins can be a little tough if they are left a bit too long, but OK if picked at a smaller size.

I rub the bristles off my Marketmore cukes with my hand, and usually slice strips of skin off with a veg peeler when preparing to eat (not to be "cheffy," but I find it results in about the right balance between keeping some of the flavour of the skin, whilst removing the sometimes slightly rubbery sensation as you bite into it.)

(Can't tell you what I do with Passandra GH cukes because I still haven't got any!!)  :lol:

I've got some prickly types and some smooth types- I have to say I prefer the skin on (Konsa and Spacemaker 80), but do peel the ones with prickles.  They were a mistake, don't know why I grew 'Polish Gherkins' apart from 'they were there', taste just like a cue though and more proficient.
