Cumbers (sigh)
« on: August 14, 2013, 20:52 »
It started off slowly and didn't look like it would do much. Then it sprang into life and produced a proffusion of cumbers. Many died off at about 2" long, but enough survived to make it worthwhile. This morning there were 5 nearly ready, with lots more getting there. Nice healthy robust plant. Tonight, many leaves wilting and looking well unhappy. Some with little white powdery spots on. Powdery mildew? Has it thrown the towel in?

Sounds like it is on its way out - cucumbers are enough to make anyone sigh. You could try taking off the affected leaves and give the plant a good feed with a tomato type fertiliser avoiding the stem. If the plant has put out any side shoots you could try training them - I did that one year and got some good cukes.

A lot of cucurbits will still happily produce fruit even when quite badly affected by powdery mildew so I just leave them to it. You can remove the most affected leaves, as Springlands says, but don't give up on them yet.

Even my grafted ones have had a couple of white leaves - I just chopped them off and they are producing like mad.
I do lose the odd one as a tiny new fruit, depends on the feeding I think.

cucumbers produce white stuff on leaves, I leave mine on.

water around the plant and try not to get any on the stem.
don't leave them to get too big.
