Roll on winter!

Pamela

I've been thinking just the same. Just three months to our first frost! I'm guessing you don't get frosts where you are.

Sad news form the refuge- we are closing down-  we will still have the Association but no refuge, we will help the street dogs still-  mostly by foster homes.
It all went really nasty in the past couple of weeks.  A galgo (greyhound type hunting dog) was found in terrible condition, she had been seen around a factory for ages. The volunteers eventually were able to catch her.  She was very ill, she had had pups and her placenta was still hanging half in/out the vet said she was just a day or so from dying. Nowhere were the pups to be found and she had sat at the factory door for a few days.  She tested positive for heart worm and Leishmania too.  After she was rescued (and taken to a specialist rescue) 3 men turned up at the refuge demanding their dog back- she was a champion they said and very valuable- so valuable they had not even bothered to chip her!
Anyway things turned nasty and the men threatened the girls there.  A week or so later the ´owners´ wife turned up at a volunteers house, forced her way in and took the volunteers dog!  She got it back.  Another volunteer has been threatened in the street by the hunters. We have decided that we can no longer put the young volunteers lives (mostly young girls 18-20 years) in danger as the threats have happened before. The men have threatened to throw poison into the refuge field too, so as soon as all the volunteers are told (a meeting this week) we will start asking other rescues around Spain if they can help us.  It is all very sad.

Oh Pamela - I am so sorry to hear about this. Those hunters must be horrible people - not to care for the dog in the first place and then to threaten the refuge workers. But I think you are right - it would not be right to put the young volunteers in danger. Just a thought - can the police not help.

Oh Pamela, I don't know what to say, it's truly awful, those poor volunteers and the dogs.  People can be evil, very evil.  I wouldn't be surprised if they left the dog so they didn't have to pay for treatment and only want it back because it's been treated for free.

So very sorry to hear that terrible news. What atrocious behaviour but you are right in that you cannot continue with that risk over your heads.

That is very sad news, but you are right.  You can't ignore the threats.

What a real shame  :(

Pamela
We'd love to have a dog or 2 - but we both work long hours and it's not fair to leave  a dog alone all day (the cats are well happy when we leave for work :D) - we're both far to responsible until one of us can reduce/quit/win the lottery...
