Broody hen - back in the hen house at night?
« on: August 06, 2013, 15:26 »
Just bought a dog cage for my broody hen. Was reading a great article on here earlier which I can't for the life of me find now

As the cage will be raised on bricks to a) stop her sitting and b) get air round her, would it be ok to leave her in there at night (in the garage to keep her safe) or should I put her back in the hen house? If I leave her in the cage should I not put it on bricks so she can get a bit of a kip? Does that make any sense at all?

I would put her in the coop if you have room , then with others around it should help to knock the broodness out of her

I would keep her in the broody breaking cage in the garage.  Any of mine that have been broody go straight back to the nest box if they are let in the coop.  She will be fine with the cage on bricks, quite a lot of mine roost in the rafters of their run.   :)

Thanks ANHBUC, that's what I'll do then. Was a bit worried that she'd get no sleep having to stand up all night, but hey, need to break the broodiness.

I agree with ANHBUC - they will be fine in the cage as long as their safe from foxes - I throw a dust sheet over mine - bit like you would a budgie cage  :D

it usually takes 3 days or so to break them

She seems a lot calmer this morning, even let me stroke her without trying to take my finger off. When she first went in the cage she was like a caged polar bear!

I agree that keeping her in the cage throughout the night is best and worked with all but one of mine who kicked up such a racket I had no option but to put in the coop at night. I live in a residential area and neighbours were asking if everything was ok because of the noise!

Let her out of the cage this afternoon (48 hours) and so far she seems to be bahaving like a normal 'non broody' hen again. Very happy and looking for a treat of strawberries.
