Comfrey
« on: August 05, 2013, 08:40 »
I watched Monty Don other week making comfry tea, I've been doing this in wheelybins for a couple of years. Monty watered it down to a jam jar to a 2 galleon watering can ;) and said dont water the foilage.
I dont water mine down and water over my cabbages un such like to keep the dreaded white butterfly away.
Is Monty right or am i doing the wrong way?
by the way nice to see the good old english summer back

I do dilute the tea, but not in any accurate way - just 'a good glug' per watering can of water. And I do water the leaves (except tomato plants) as well as the roots. I have read somewhere that it's a good foliar feed and I've certainly not had any problems.

But if Monty says...   :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I throw leaves into a lidded water butt and just top up from there, every so often i'll get the kids to add a bunch and top up again with fresh water. It doesnt stink as bad as the stuff we made a few years ago so i dont water down any further than that.

I water the whole plant in the case of outdoor stuff, indoor toms get watered from the base at the dug in flower pots

I suppose it depends on how concentrated your comfrey tea is?  I know some people on here have their comfrey in an old bit of downpipe, which is fitted up so the 'juice' drips into a container.   So that would be very concentrated.

Did Monty indicate how much comfrey he puts in and how much water?

When I make mine, I jus chuck the comfrey in an old plastic dustbin, fill it up with water and wait.  If I think it looks rather black, then I'll add less of it to the watering can!

As grannie says there are 2 ways of making it - and one of those needs diluting  ;)
