Over trodden hen
« on: August 02, 2013, 18:52 »
When I had my cockerel I asked advice re over 'treading' and I bought some saddles.  With Thatcher gone I removed the saddles  but the Copper Marans is virtually bald under her wings.  Is there anything I can do to help her or just let nature take it's course.  I have put poultry spice in the layers.  Ta. ???

Hi there,
Given what some hens look like when going through the moult, or even ex-battery hens, and allowing for the fact we are in 'summer' so weather warm and mostly dry, I wouldn't think there is too much to worry about.  Just give tlc and enjoy the fact that they're not stressed by the attentions of your boy!!

A bit of extra protein is always welcome when they are producing new feathers.  Things like meal worms, tuna and even eggs are a good source (not from your kitchen of course).   ;)

She will re-feather when she has her moult :)
