Blackberries in No-Mans-Land
« on: July 31, 2013, 21:47 »
Behind the fence at the bottom of my garden there is a disused lane that has remained blocked off for at well over 20 years.

Brambles and huge privets have taken over and this seasons crop of blackberries down there is very bountiful :=] See pic below for a small sample of the potential pickings. Many of the fruits are huge already and ripening up a treat.

I'm looking forward to some juicy apple and berry tart in a few weeks, I may even get the ladder out and give them a good soaking with some tomato feed...........

Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit.

I've got a 6ft cane with a home-made wire hook tied on the end - makes getting those out-of-reach ones easy to pick!

They look like a cultivated variety, have they got thorns on? It's just the big leaves and large clusters of fruit look just like my thornless variety in the garden. Maybe they're an escapee, lucky you :)

Thorns present and lots of 'em :=]

I'm trying to think of ways to cultivate this bush for next year, perhaps root  one of the runners in a big pot on my side and then train any growth along canes or wire against the fence. Anyone think this might be worth it?

AS they are doing so well and are soooo within reach, maybe save your growing space for something else yummy to have as well, perhaps?

Sorry - it's stashed at Mum's, as she lives on the borders of farmland/country park and I always go there for foraging in the hedgerows. I can't take any credit for it though, my Dad made it in the 70s. It's 3-4mm green-coated wire bent into a hook (rounded end as it was intended for squabbling kiddies to use) and wound round the top of a cane. At various points it's had string wound round the top bit to hold it more steady.
