When I took on my plot I'd never given a thought to storing the produce. I'd not thought that far ahead.  Having veg to store is what it's all about and sort of rounds off the year.  Along with freezing, drying and preserving it makes it all worthwhile  :)

Isn't it just! Until this year i've only really had beans and 'snips to contend with storing, and I can manage both of those. Now with the squashes and pumpkins doing so well i also have those to contend with.
Usually we don't have any spuds to store either, but looks like I (may) have some to store, as I planted some apparently nuclear bomb proof (aka Blight Proof) lates.

Spend ytd: £293.44 (setting up plot 29 has been expensive) Harvest ytd: £163.93 (as at 8/8)

What do you do with pumkins except put candles in them at halloween?

Make Soup / Roast them (admittedly this year, if they grow well, I do plan on giving a couple to my 7 & 5 year old nephews to carve for haloween! I don't normally "do" the whole haloween thing, but it's my sister (there mums) birthday, and they think it's hilarious and that she's a witch!

Keep the flesh and give the kids the pumpkins.  Make them a cake with it  :)

She does indeed! Hat, Cape, make-up, the whole kit and caboodle! She's also a dab hand at carving pumpkins, and last year did the most spectacular "self" portrait of herself flying on her broomstick!

You are in the right place ;)

My potatoes are stored in cardboard boxes, on boards so they're not in contact with the concrete floor,  in a brick lean-to shed. If it looks like it'll be really cold they get old sacks and stuff thrown over them to keep them a bit warmer.

My pumpkins/squash are stored on trays in the spare bedroom which is unheated, unless I have guests  :D

My swede stay in the ground or get cubed and frozen til I want them.

Thanks, that's really useful. I'm in a similar situation to MJ. Looks like my potatoes will go in the garage in boxes and resting on a pallet or two. Here's hoping the local wildlife don't take to munching them!

I store my pumpkins on my stairs.  I live in a first floor flat so the stairs in are just above frost free but not too warm.  Although it's not dark, I have kept pumkins for several months there quite successfully.

What do you do with onions? I have just pulled up 50 to dry off. I have a shed on the plot (probably not frost free), my balcony or somewhere in the flat that does get warm easily. Do onions need light or dark?

You need to think how long will 50 onions last you?
I use an onion on most days, so storing in your shed would be fine for me cos I would use them well before any chance of frost.

You've probably got at least 3 months before you have to worry about them  ;)

We probably use around 3 a week so 15-20 weeks or so! Fair point about the frost but should I be storing somewhere light or dark?
