How long should Enviromesh last?
« on: July 28, 2013, 16:20 »
Hi

I brought some from Amazon last year. I've had a sheet covering my Swede for a couple of months but it's started to rip in today's strong wind. Is it normal for it not to last a growing season?

Thanks

That doesn't sound good. I put mine through the washing machine when they're finished with and haven't had any problems. Only rips I have are due to the 'nice person' who took a knife to it and various other covers....

I have some 4 years old or more and I've never known it rip unless I've put it over something sharp.

Sorry I've just realised it says it's a fleece on the packet. I thought enviromesh and fleece were the same thing.

Aha! Yep, fleece tears so easily. Hate the stuff. Now only use it to stop carrot fly, and then I use it folded in four layers!

Enviromesh and its many rivals is said to last for up to 10 years - can't remember whether it's been on the market long enough to really test that though...........

One thing it definitely won't survive is burning cardboard too near it on a breezy day (my rows of carrots are of necessity much shorter than they were 2 years ago!   )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Can you cut enviromesh to fit what you need?

It doesn't fray much if that's what you mean (the manufacturer's claim that it doesn't fray at all but I'm not sure everyone agrees with that, and there are many rival products which may be different - some use a miniature soldering iron to "cut" it in an attempt to make sure it doesn't.)

I think I've had mine over 12/13 years & still going strong,I've also washed mine in the machine in the past & it was fine,it hasn't frayed at all.
