Can anyone help identify this weird plant?

Can anyone identify this plant, it appeared on top of a mound of earth in my garden early this year , It’s now about 3ft tall with a single stem, the top is 2ft in diameter  I have asked around and nobody has seen anything like it

I had a couple of those that a chap at work gave me once.  Nice plant, no flowers, but when the seed heads open, they explode EVERYWHERE!!!!!!
