I'm interested in growing them and from what i've read Oak is the best type of log to grow them on but I don't have or know anyone with an oak tree. Has anyone had any success with growing shiitake mushroms using sillver birch logs?

I was warned that you have to be careful what you grow them on, not so much the type of wood, but that the wood needs to be freshly cut.  I'm sorry this is not very helpful, because I can't remember anymore than that.  Lets hope somebody comes on with some good advice.
