Tree peony
« on: July 18, 2013, 17:51 »
Managed to get one at work reduced from nearly £30 down to £6. Its quite established, so major bargain  :D

I have a large raised bed border at home full of herbaceous stuff and want to get a few shrubby things in to give more structure.  Will it cope with having stuff like that growing round it or is it better in splendid isolation somewhere - would have to be a pot as no room anywhere else

Not grown one before, but sure someone on here has  ;)  :)

I have a few of these. They are really prone to wind damage, so put them somewhere a bit sheltered if you can. Also don't plant too deep if they are grafted. Otherwise enjoy the very short lived blossoms. I love them despite that!

I have a gorgeous yellow one that's mixed in with other plants. It was supposed to be just temporary but 8 years later it's still there, in the shade, and every year there are progressively more flowers.

I do deadhead them after flowering, just like regular peonies, and give it water if the weather has been dry. Other than that, it's a no care plant. Just be sure it's where you want as it won't move well and will spread a bit in width as it matures over the years.

Mum has one planted in amongst azaeleas and rhodis.  It's a bit of a thug and can hold it's own against the big plants.

It must be - my neighbour who is not too obsessive about plant care  ::) has 2 and they are both big healthy plants about 8' tall and 4' or so across, although as you may have guessed they've never been pruned!

My yellow ones are certainly thugs indeed

I wish the red and pink ones would grow faster -- they seem to be far less vigorous

This is a double pink one, but fairly established  :)

I'm collecting reduced stuff from work to revamp the bed this autumn, so can give it some space.  So far collected this, 3 painted sages and a hyssop.  The sage and hyssop are 9cm pots from herb bench reduced to 50p, so going to pot those up and grow them on  :)

I was given a yellow one about 7 years ago and, believe me, it can fair grow, plus mine produces seedlings all around. I gave it a hefty prune last back-end as it was taking over a path area, but am going to have to remove it in autumn because, despite the flowers and nice foliage, it is taking up far too much room.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It's funny, my friend has seedlings from her tree, but I could never get any seedlings to transplant, or seeds to germinate ........... they must just like it where they are  :nowink:
