Had to strip out the broad beans
« on: July 12, 2013, 08:02 »
Between blackfly and chocolate spot these looked a complete mess, most had started to fall over so we stripped the bed out and took the beans that looked the best of the bunch, we got a good 1 and a half pound so thats fine.

But what can i stick in after broads, i have cabbage needing a home or chive type leeks, which is better.

Well the cabbages would benefit from the extra nitrogen in the soil fixed by the bean plants. In the rotation plan I use, brassicas follow legumes for this reason.

Thank you, cabbages win then, the leeks still look like chives so i would have been embarrassed to put them in.

I would have been planting at midnight so no-one could see.  ::)

Most strange I thought that I had posted a reply - must have pressed the wrong button. Anyway would agree with Will but would also remind you to protect the plants from the dreaded cabbage whites - there seem to be a lot about. Also as I am sure you know cabbages like to be planted firmly. Maybe your leeks would benefit from a little feed to encourage them to grow a little bigger.

I used a liquid seaweed based fertilizer mine last year and it did help them. Some how I forgot about them this year until it was too late - I think I will check the local GC to see if they have any.
