wizzard beans highly recomended
« on: July 10, 2013, 21:14 »
Just harvested my 3rd lot of wizzard beans, just a flash in the boiling water served on the side ofscrambled egg on toast delicious. They look and taste like broad beans myoh tells me.

The yeald is fantastic, there are only 4 beans to a pod, but the pods are really close together and hang in pairs or threes. They have stood out all winter as small plants, in clay soil, on an exposed site, direct sown with no support although i've planted them quite close. I was given some other plants by a friend they had really long pods but only half the beans had set and they were only about 4 pods per plant.

I've grown those this year too but mine aren't yet harvestable yet. I grew them alongside Aquadulce Claudia and the Wizard are a good foot taller. They do have lots of flowers - far more than the Aquadulce so hoping to get a really decent harvest off them.

Thanks for this - my Aquadulce have averaged about 5 per pod, and a maximum of 6 pods per plant so I think the Wizzard ones are definitely worth a go.  Sounds like you have similar conditions to me too.  :)

Mine are full of pods. Smaller pods and less beans per pod as Madame Cholet says, but growing in groups so overall productivity is better.   They also stood out all winter with no weather protection in soil that does sit wet as we are close to the river here in Reading.

I've eaten a few and they are just as good as normal broad beans.  I'm saving the rest for seed as I'm ditching the normal over wintering broad beans for these this year  :)

I have to try these next year. I did not realise that they were like broad beans (my favourite). They sound really good. :)

All this is good to hear.  I already intended to get some for next year.  I haven't had any broad beans yet this year.  They are the one thing that is really struggling for me this season.

My peas and broad beans are always attacked by pea and bean weevil in whatever bed i put them in and grow through it, but this year they mounted a vicious assault that actually killed off a few pea plants.  The weakened broad beans, two types, crimson flowered and Aquadulce then got chocolate spot.  I only have around 6 rather stunted plants now flowering.

I had a handful of seed left and have just planted out a second attempt.   Very late, but you never know.

I will need new seed next year, as I don't fancy saving anything from this year.  So good to hear Wizards are doing well.  Presumably they have the same pests and diseases as regular broad beans?

You can get them here.   Possibly other places too, but this is the one I know about.

The only thing mine have suffered from is black bean aphid.  Easily sorted with a quick spray  :)
