I hesitate to mention them to you Beetroot Queen....but under the trees there are ants (sorry) by the million. I have put beans and peas near the walnut and they are black with ants. I thought they were after aphids at first, but there aren't that many, same as slugs. I have a place near the house marked for next year, where I can keep an eye on tunnels.

Ewwww dont mention that word  touch wood i havent seen one for half an hour or so. 

What about in tubs i suppose they would dry out too fast in that hot weather.

The problem there is compost, it is extremely expensive. I have tried using soil but it goes rock hard and throws out weed seedlings like crazy. Strangely lovely neighbours (who are at this moment planting a load of cabbages for us) don't grow lettuce either. Can't speak enough to find out why though.

I will put absolutely anything possible in a salad - I love salad!

I grow, lettuce (various, numerous), radishes (when they work), spring onions, toms, cukes, sweet peppers, various leaves (rocket, mizuna, lambs lettuce etc), carrots, beetroot, peas, pea shoots, beans (various), mushrooms and salad potatoes.

Then you have nasturnium flowers and leaves, herbs etc.

Then I add things like sweetcorn, olives, grapes and apple sometimes, nuts (walnuts, pine nuts), cooked cous cous or rice etc.

Just about anything can be added to make a faboulous salad.

mustard Red,spinach, red &green lettuce ,rocket,radish, land cress, lovage leaves,nasturtiums, tomatoes nearly there.
