kestrel harvest
« on: July 03, 2013, 22:04 »
Hi all

Harvested some kestrel tonight from large bags
Yields weren't high but quite a few large spuds
Id say each plant only gave me 5 good spuds doesn't seem alot I dont know why.
I managed 2.6 kilo from about 6 plants.

Will get some pics up soon

When did you plant them - mosT people are finding that they need longer than usual to grow this year because of the cold start

Mine still have green foliage, as do others on my site. To early to lift, I think. Was the foliage on yours dying down?

Yes was looking a bit worse for wear
Been in about 14 weeks
It wasnt the size of the spuds was the yield more than anything
Not many smaller spuds in there

I think 2nd earlies need a bit longer than that, if the smaller spuds had been left to fatten up you may have had a good yield  ;)

Growing any tatties in bags is a bit hit or miss in terms of yield.  They do need regular watering (and feeding) after 6 weeks or so.

Kestral, in my experience, is good for growing on as a main crop in bags.  They produce good bakers and keep quite well.  In amongst the bakers you'll find the smaller boilers.

Often the shaws will get quite straggly and unkempt when growing in bags at this time of year,  so make sure you give them room to spread or tie them up to prevent them being trampled on (not always easy!)

With my container-grown Kestrel I'd expect at least 1kg per seed potato. As mum says, we are all going to have to wait longer this year. Mine have been in about 14 weeks but I won't lift any for at least a fortnight.

I think I planted them out in April after chatting indoors. Will do no harm to leave them. Fed initially with potato organic feed from pound land. As well as the odd feed of comfrey and nettle. Will start watering but we have had a lot of rain.

Tipped out a 12 litre plastic bucket of Kestrel today and got these: 1.3kg of good sized spuds. They'd been in for exactly 14 weeks but I'll leave the rest to fatten up a bit.

Mine are behind. 14 weeks now. Lots of foliage first flowers just showing. A crafty furtle told me they were starting to put some tubers out now. No more furtling from now, just wait for them to die down, then it's get 'em up and dancing around the chip pan time.
