Advice? hens per cockerel for fertility
slowef, think your right about the welsummer , i think its a mixed breed.
Youn cockerel looks in good shape by that picture mines only 4 months old and hes looking good.
I hatched mine from six eggs, i got 4 chicks at first i thought i got 2 cockerels and 2 hens.
I wanted the cockerels to breed with my other Rhode Island Red hens so i kept the two cockerels and gave the other hens to a friend.
As theyve grown there is only one that looks like a cockerel and im not 100 % if the other one is a cockerel but it made me think by seeing your gary< he looks like the one im unsure of.
Out of the two one has got the cockerel tail feathers and the shape the other hasnt grown the tail feathers yet so its hard to tell.
I wouldnt mind getting some photos uploaded so people can look at him or her to say what they think.
I tried uploading a picture but i couldnt do it? do pictures have to be uploaded from a website on here?

yea lv seen it thanks.
l mit already have a incubator l think just got to check to see if it belongs to the person we think if it doesnt then its mine. not yet l wasnt but l mit have a go in april time as l have one and then go from there. its all experience but l wont buy expensive eggs first so l then can make mistakes if everyone nows what l mean. if they are successful then l mit buy some more but a bit more expensive like rirs and see if they are good. like l said it would be a bit of an exceperment to start with. but if anyone nows of any advise on the subject then it would be a great advantige please. l dont mean to sound horrble when l say exceperment by the way.

You will get plenty of advice but i think most people would rather you not use one but if your not buying one then you might as well try.
Another thing drew , if you hatch 20 eggs , you could quite easily end up with 10 cockerels!
Thats one bad point about hatching them yourself but you could always try and sell them or give them away.
I gave about 5 or 6 cockerels away as i was lucky enough to know somone who had the land.
If you can get a silkie do it that way thats what advice ive seen and it looks the best advice when weighed up with the other methods.
