Fruitless furtling.
« on: June 24, 2013, 18:44 »
I know my Kestrel tayties were a bit slow to get started due to the weather, but they've been in 13 weeks now, so I thought I'd have a crafty little furtle anyway. The spuds have been battered by the winds, so can't do much damage. Lots of foliage, and look very healthy. They haven't flowered yet though. Anyway, I put my furtling head on and proceeded. Absolutely nothing. Not a glimmer. It was only very tentative, but I would have thought there would be something to bring some joy to my sad existance.  :(

as second earlies I would normally expect them to need more than 12 weeks, more so this year.

Only one thing to do Mum. Leave 'em to it and try again after the flowers have bloomed and gone to the great flowerbed in the sky. It just seems starange that there is absolutely nothing at all. Not even anything the size of a blackbirds egg. :(

It's a personal opinion, but I think Kestrels are best grown to maturity, rather than used as "new" spuds. They're a wonderfully versatile spud and good storers.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have the same thing with my Ulster Classics.  Planted early April.  Lots of good growth, flowering now.  In previous years a furtle at this stage would reveal small potatoes in considerable number waiting to expand a bit.   This year, nothing at all.  I can only wait and hope.

I wouldn't be too worried about flowers appearing. I have 22 Kestrel plants and only one has any flowers. As DD says, they really should be left and not lifted as earlies.

I've got nothing to furtle in the earlies, but the desirees seem to have a few marble sized potatoes...now to pray that blight doesn't pay a visit. No Smith Periods so far this year, long may this continue!

My first earlies, second earlies and mains all seem to be at the same stage  ::)  Going to have a quick furtle today, but as others have said, if there are new potatoes elsewhere, my Kestrel will be left to grow  ;)
