strawberry runners and weed suppresant fabric
« on: June 24, 2013, 16:22 »
the first year i had my allotment my neighbour kindly gave me a load of strawberry plants :)

that was 2 summers ago, so the plants are in their 3rd year now.  will they go on producing well or will it tail off from now on?

i notice that  some  are sending out runners, and, as i am growing  through weed suppresant black mesh this year i dont really know how to turn them into baby strawberry plants, (some from previous years just rooted themselves in the strawberry patch, no bother).

I would like to encourage them to root in a pot, but they are like little nodules on a straight stem at the moment

Fix down the bit where the little nodules are,  into a small pot of compost, using a bit of bent wire (cut up coat hanger?)   :)

As mum says... here are some pics for you to see how I did it on my rooftop garden and with my weed fabric. I just use thin electrical wire - like earth wire or the flat grey plastic covered 2 core wire - just strip the plastic off the copper and use like that..

Paperclips will work but keep the long piece with squiggles in it to hold it in the soil from pulling out easily.

My way of growing strawberries is. 1st year plants cut off all runners.    2nd year plants pot runners up as previously stated. 3rd year plants after fruiting pull up and compost and replace with the potted ones.

I potted mine up like Gavin. When the runner has rooted sever from mother plant .
I started off with 10 plants three years ago,,there are now about 700 + ,and these are sending out
runners also.
After about four years strawberry plants start to deteriorate, potting on runners help preserve your stock.

I cut the "cord" when the new plant is growing well and has about 4 leaves.. Yeah I did loads that year - started with 20 plants and got about 200 new runners..

Does splitting the crown have the effect of rejuvenating strawberries? I inherited some which have to be 3 years+ and this year dug up, cleaned and split them. They are fruiting well, but I don't have much of a comparison.

I have found that splitting them and replantling works very well.  My current Strawberries are looking great and covered in fruit, they were dug up and split from the allotment over two years ago and were about four years old when split.

I just put a stone on the runner, they seem to root Ok without a problem.  I have lots of stones but not many wire coat hangers!
