Flowers disappearing from b beans
« on: June 20, 2013, 13:24 »
This year I have the best b beans yet with Sutton and bunyards. The plants are healthy except for tiny oval shaped holes in the tops of the leaves which are def not blackfly as they are holes. Wonderful flowers all over them but quite a lot have just gone, either fallen off or stumps where they were. Not seen any slugs on them and keep them watered when weather dry.

Any guesses?

Are the beans not setting now, that tends to happen once the beans start, give them a few days and see if any pods are showing.

I've got the same problem.  The plants look good and healthy, loads of flowers, but none of the lower ones appear to be setting.  The flowers are just wilting and falling off.  I don't think it's lack of water because they haven't lacked any.

Noticed today that some of the flowers higher up the stems have got little beanpods forming behind them, which makes me think it might be something to do with the bees having a late start this year.  It was a very cold spring.

the flowers need to be polinated to set .... it doesn't matter if there smothered in flowers if theres no bees then I'm afraid there will be no beans  :(

Well my broad beans are being raided by honey short tongued bees  >:(

This is what they do:

Honey bees' tongues are too short to reach into the flower so they chew a hole in the top to get to the nectar.

Only the bumble bees with long tongues that can reach into the flower will pollinate them.
