Am I too late
« on: June 18, 2013, 12:30 »
I have just managed to get two large beds sorted out - both roughly 18ft x 8ft (hadn't expected to get them done this year but OH got some time off work and did them for me - lots of brownie points there then!).

Just wondering am I too late to sow peas and m/tout.  I found a bag of seed potatoes (main crop) in the PT which are nicely chitted could I sow these (I don't mind if I don't get a great crop from them as I have others already planted but I don't want to use the space if I am going to get nothing at all from them).

I would like to do some brassicas in one of the beds (Swedes, cabbage, sprouts, brocolli, cauli and PSB) would I get away with sowing seeds for these at this late stage or should I bite the bullet and buy some plug plants from my local GC.

Hi Elbana,

Good question, I am in the same position as you. Another bed to dig but what to plant?

Think we are okay for pakchoi and leeks to still go out. . . .

My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

My gardening diary is here - go on, have a peek , you might be able to help me!

I generaly sow my swede and early sprouting PSB for the spring in july so you should be ok with those. Caulis may be ok still and I again I have just sown some broccoli. You should still be ok for the peas and mangy toot as they are around 12-13 weeks,
The spuds I would put in buckets so if needed you can put them in the greenhouse if you have one come theautumn.

Some good advice there  ;) I've just sown my swede, winter cabbages and Autumn brocolli.............

If you want brussels you'll have to buy some plug plants from the garden centre

Loads can still be sown.

Sweetcorn, Beans, Swede, Peas, Courgette, squash, pumpkin, outdoor cucumbers?

You're lucky. I've still got to prepare my beds for the brassicas, beans and sweetcorn. :(

You can pop in a row of Kohl Rabi as well, as that is a quick grower.

And of course, some carrots for young pullings, or even leaving them for winter!

As we're late in the sowing stakes, general advice would be to sow direct out of doors to avoid any stasis due to the shock of being transplanted, although many say brassicas in general need a strong root system before planting out. Given some cabbages take a while to germinate and get a move on, I would buy plugs.

Then there's Autumn king carrots to sow. Given the space needed, I would avoid potatoes now, especially main crop ones, although I will be growing a few earlies in my greenhouse for a "Christmas" harvest, but that's it. No problems sowing for Autumn/winter crops like Spinach and kale. All herbs are still a good idea, and still just time to get another crop of beetroot.
Obviously forget sowing squash and courgette out of doors now in my opinion.
