Good to know, thanks Gavin

I went down to the plot again to find a spot, and have decided to take up some of the usable sized autumn planted onions (3 to 4 ins across)  and make a little block of sweetcorn plants there.

Hope they don't have any aversions to each other

Just got an email to tell me that my replacement sweetcorn plants (replacing some I grew from seed which failed to thrive) are on the way from Marshalls. 32 plants (16 plants on a BOGOF deal) for £5.95. Had to pay postage, but bulked up the order with some bean, onion, cabbage, winter seeds for overwintering. Will let you know if they are any good.

am ready to plant out my sweetcorn plants. noticed most people on my allotment site have covered theirs with plastic covers, fleece or  built glass walls around them. wondered if this is necessary and why?  :(
only second year on plot  and first time growing sweetcorn
dont want them all eaten :(

Many people shelter the corn from the wind early on. If your plot is exposed, I would plant your corn after the weekend, as it's going to be rather windy

I've found that using plastic 'pop' bottles or plastic milk bottles as mini-cloches has made all the difference to my success rates with sweetcorn - my feeling is this is mostly due to protection from the wind. Whether there is an increase in temp. or temp. fluctuations are reduced I'm not so sure.

Cheers,
Balders

Definitely going to do this next year - mine are still rather flimsy and I bet it's because the site is quite windy. I'll even have a poke about in our recycling bin to see if there are any 2 litre bottles to pinch for the ones that are in now. They could do with help!

Mine are over a foot tall as well but I noticed at the weekend that the leaves are very pale nearly bordering on being yellow - it might be the variety but to be on the safe side I gave them a good feed :)

I put mine out in late May and they did nothing for 4 weeks, and then BOOM!

They are nearly 2 foot tall now and about 1 inch thick.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

My sweetcorn (Mirai Picnic) from Marshalls arrived. Healthly looking plants about 25cm tall, but being plug plants there is not a huge amount of root. Planted out on a really windy weekend, followed immediately by some really cool nights, so I'm a bit pessimistic at the moment.

Mine all died.  I'd chitted the rest of the packet and on tuesday i popped them in the polystyrene modules that I just took the bedding plants out of.  Today they are an inch tall!

have been reluctant to put them out but tomorrow they're going in, weather has been so windy lately didn't want to risk them getting blown away
