Not many flowers or fruits on the Gardners' Delight in the poly greenhouse - may haave been shaded out by my work table and other plants I was propogating in there - lesson for next year!

I've moved the work bench out, fed and pruned and hope to have at least the ones that are now green fruits.

Tumbling Toms in hanging baskets are a mass of flowers and I spotted one red fruit this morning; too hard to sample yet, but coming on.

'Gartenperle' going red daily - loads of fruits, although some are very small.

'Roma VF' - - now remind me - blossom end rot is overwatering?? Right?  ???
I have lost a few of the smaller paler green fruits to this.

The Grafted selection: 'San Marzano' - not doing well; 'Shirley' - seems better; can't remember which is the third, but seems ok.

Now they have all been watered the same and fed the same - the baskets don't seem to hold enough water despite using water retaining granules.
The grafted don't have any blossom end rot and the Roma VF have suffered the most and they are in the hottest spot in the greenhouse. ???

Blossom end rot means there's not enough calcium in the plant usually because there's not enough water at the roots  :D The grafted plants probably have a better root system

Some varieties are worse than others for BER.

edit to make sense

Started picking a few. Very late this year. I am leaving the greenhouse open all night as I have had a lot of mildew in previous years. I have seen a little mildew this year and have removed affected leaves to stop it spreading.

I ate my first tomato of the year today. A Tigerella. It was small but perfectly formed. I cut it in half with due ceremony and shared it with my husband  :tongue2:

Did anyone watch Gardeners World last night and Monty's tomato experiment? I wasn't very impressed with any of his results tbh.

I did, he said the trial is for taste.
They all looked very poor, but what was the idea of using so little soil in those terracotta tubs, that must restrict growth.

He contradicted himself by first saying with his growbag ones , its not a problem using a growbag and with watering, then showed blossom end rot on the tomatoes and called out thats an erratic water supply.

One of my outdoor Moneymakers bit the dust with the wind last night. Blew the pot clean over......and it's staked and tied.

I was at an open garden yesterday and I saw the very thing that Monty was on about. Tomatoes in pots on patios with hardly any compost. So, I know what he was on about. It's what people do and the poor results he got confirmed it to be a bad idea.  He was testing out the various ways that folks grow tomatoes and why they sometimes fail.  I think we all got the message  :)

'Sweet million' was the 3rd grafted plant I've got :D

Don't think there will be a million fruits on it, but looking good anyway!

Lots of green ones and waiting patiently for them to start to ripen.  They look better than last year because by this time, I had taken half the plants out as they didn't even have signs of flowers much less fruit.  At least I'll get to try some this year.I've got 6 varieties (I think) and it's likely to be Alicante or Golden Cherry first.  I don't mind which as long as I get to eat them.

I gave my toms a radical hair cut yesterday.  I got too carried away I think   Oh well, it's done now but it's much easier to get into the greenhouse  :D
