Parsnip Thinnings

Afternoon all,

After thinning my parsnips way too late, I have had to pull out some parsnips, that are around 5mm thick and long and true white roots.

Will these transplant at this thickness, or is it still not worth trying?

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Very doubtfuly they will transplant successfully. The only hope with parsnips is to do it carefully. In thinning you will have damaged the fine root hairs that you can scarcely see and possibly the very fine tip of the tap root.

The good news is the pulled thinnings are straight and true. Probably means the seedlings left behind are straight and true so far. Delighted to see the perfect shape of my thinnings. I know parsnips suffer somewhat from carrot fly, but should we be as careful with the thinning process as one is with carrot thinnings ?

Mine are under a debris netting cloche, so hoping that we have no problems with carrot fly.

Whizzy's off line at the mo,  but as I sow mine as a pinch of seed every 8", that's what they're thinned out to!

I have them about 6-8 inches apart. And have about 25 parsnips in total.
