Bloomin' Wind!!!
« on: June 14, 2013, 12:38 »
Went to the plot this morning on the way to work and was distraught to see that the strong winds we've had recently have bent/snapped half of the sweetcorn and completely filled the holes of the leeks

Anything i can do to save the leeks or shall I just rip em out and plant more?

Cheers,
Jim

Ps. On a lighter note, i picked my first strawberry today and it was beautiful! Nothing like what comes from the shops.
British by birth, Scottish by the grace of God

The leeks wouldnt worry me to be honest but the sweetcorn sound like they have gone upstairs for good.

Once my leeks are i the ground they are left well alone. Getting them to the stage of agoing in the ground is another matter  ::)

There's no problem in leek dibbed holes being filled in with blown soil.

I agree, they leeks will be fine  :) The bent corn probably needs some canes and string across and around the block of plants to keep them upright - I have to do that most years on my plot, cos it's so very windy.

You'll know for next year now  ;)

Jim, your sweet corn must have been growing apace to be tall enough to snap in the wind.
Mine are only a foot to 18 inches tall, and not at the snapable stage.
I had a good crop last year, but I did lose the odd one or two to high winds. So this year I have planted them in a sheltered position near a hedge and the greenhouse. I've also planted them just that little bit closer to each other for block support, probably a foot either way. Smaller cobs possibly, but less vulnerable. Will be staking and stringing as soon a they get high enough to take a tumble.
