Fenugreek leaves (methi)
« on: June 12, 2013, 17:21 »
I buy boxes of these dried from Trashco, but thought it would be good to grow some fresh.  Have a lovely pot full, but they are totally tasteless  ???

Have I treated them too nice and growing them in a container with plentiful water has made them lush but flavourless  ::)

Thank you for any help  :)

Im sure I read somewhere that the taste doesn't really develop until after it's been dried.

Is there's a smell from the plant but no taste?

Doesn't really smell fenugreeky either  ::)  Not unpleasant - crunchy juicy leaves, but just insipid.

If you have to dry it to get the taste, I will revert to buying it.  It is a soft green leaf, so will need to grow fields of it to get enough to dry

Even the fresh stuff in our local indian shop does not smell as strong as dried, but does develop flavour and scent when cooked

Maybe try that first before digging it up

It went in the curry tonight  :)  Did have some flavour but not as strong as dried.   Think I spoiled it too much by growing it in a pot with nice compost and watering it too much  ::)

You can sprout the seeds so will try that next  :)

The sprouts are quite a strong taste --only eaten them raw, mind  ;)

I love the taste of fenugreek so that suits me.  Spicy salad - yum  :D

I used to buy fresh methi which was very leafy and tasty but my homegrown has never reached anything like the size, but it's easy to grow so worth a punt.  It is perhaps best dried. No flavour quite like it so worth doing. You can grow it in any available patch  :)

Thanks CQ  :)  I'll try direct sowing on the plot and see what happens  :)

I just assumed it was a bit tricky so pampered it in a pot  ::)

It grows in all sorts of unpromising looking soil in India, so I guess (apart from not liking cold) it must be pretty tough

They go to seed if left unpicked and they form a seed pod. I've never tried eating the pods. Anyone?
