I am learning from my previous mistakes (I hope!)  I told Brian not to rotovate the patch of ground where my brassicas were going, and I just went over it gently with the rake to keep it firm.  then put the plants in right up to their first true leaves and packed the ground around them hard.

I think in previous years I didn't put them deep enough or I didn't firm the ground enough and I always had leaning tower of pisa type cabbages.  Also I've got some calabrese in this year and they are staked!

Hubby was planning to rotavate the bed for them but i'll tell him not to bother.

Did you heel them in firmly?

As Grannie said, brassica's need to be planted in undisturbed soil and then heeled in firmly. Once planted puddle them in.

You could replant them more deeply, right up to the first real leaves and they would cope OK

I tread down the soil and dig a hole in it, and also heel in firmly too. They stay up then I've found

oh, they are still in their pots!  you didn't say at first!  I thought they were in the ground and they fell over!     ;)

I just hope my brassica cage stands up to our winds.  Nearly went over this afternoon, but Brian found me some nice strong lengths of wood and banged them in the ground next to some of my canes for extra support!

Perhaps canes and cable ties wasn't such a good idea, but it looked good!  :(

   And me!  Especially as you were talking about your 11lb red cabbages in another thread, I thought, 'well blimey what do you expect?!'  So they may get a bit droppy drawers before you plant them out.  I have followed John Harrisons advice, and advice taken on here and we have cabbages growing!!!  Liming the pottting compost and then planting them in firm soil up to their first true leaves has worked wonders!  I reckon we are about two weeks away from lovely cabbages grown from seed.  Hooray!  :D
