Foxes digging up squash plants??
« on: June 11, 2013, 11:03 »
I can't believe that this is the case, however, I spent ages the other night putting in summer and winter squash plants that I had carefully nurtured and went to the lottie yesterday to find that almost half of them have been dug out.
I put a bit of bonemeal and a few chicken pellets in the hole before planting, gave it a good mix up and watered the plants well after.
Can it really be foxes?????? Just random pulling out of the plants and then looks like digging in the holes??
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

We get foxes and badgers digging stuff out. Its a pain especially when you are not on the plot to replant something.

Badgers leave the huge claw marks but foxes act just like cats and dig them up. Maybe they were after the pellets, i am sure i read somewhere that foxes and badgers dont share the same area but they do on our site.  ::)

Doesnt help as one of the old boys brings down his left over chicken or meat bone from the roast to let the foxes have that.

It think it might be - I lost some kohlrabi in the same way last year.

Your bonemeal and chicken pellets were what they were after (actually the chicken rather than the pellets).

Are they in a fit state to plant again?

The chicken manure and bonemeal definitely attracts foxes, and the worst bit is that if you try to replant in the same hole, the fox will just keep coming back and digging them all up again  :( I learned that dreadful mistake a few years - now I scatter the chicken manure pellets and bone meal / BFB on top several weeks before planting to give the foxes plenty of time to have a good dig around and then lose interest before hoeing everything in and then planting (with just plain old compost in the hole)

Alas no. They have been torn out of the ground and the roots are almost non-existent on the plants. I'm sure I have done this before and had no trouble but this year there are more foxes as there seem to be two families. Luckily, ive got some spare plants that I can replace the dug up ones with. But the time I spent is annoying. I really need to get a fence around the plot.

So I need to move the place where I plant the squashes? I cant simply dig out the soil and remove any bonemeal and pellets and replant?? That's a real pain as I have planned this space especially for the squash crops.

You could try covering over the area in some rotted cow or horse manure. That might change their minds  :D Or, even better, comfrey tea. Peee-eewwww!

Just be thankful that you haven't the problem of a gal I know - she gets deer pulling up her veg and now she's building a 7 ft high fence to keep the pests out. My mother has the same problem and puts up electric fencing around the veg they like most, like cabbages.

Wow! A few squash plants and foxes pale into insignificance compared to having to go to those extremes to keep critters out Trillium.
