Hen not well - advice needed
« on: December 23, 2007, 09:07 »
One of my hens has had some yellow diarrohea for a few days, so am in the middle of a course of Verm-X in case worms are the problem. However, yesterday evening she seemed very quiet, did not want her corn, and now has some blood around her vent and is breathing with a 'rattly' sound. She has layed this morning but the egg was covered with blood and poo. She is drinking and moving around but still not eating. Any ideas what this could be / what I should do? Would it be best to isolate her?

It sounds very much like coccidiosis to me Fenland Girl.

How old is she and was she immunised for it when she was a chick ?

You can get some treatment from the pet supplies store tomorrow and start treating her (I would isolate her).  If it does not clear up I would take her to a vets after Christmas.

Thanks Aunty - I thought it might be this. She now has frothy bubbles in the coner of her eyes too  :( . I don't know if she was vaccinated, forgot to ask, but I'll see if I can contact the breeder tomorrow. I think I'll see if I can get her to the vet tomorrow anyway otherwise I will worry all over Christmas.

That's probably another problem, could be mycoplasma.  She is in a poorly state.  How long have you had her ?

We've had her since October, she had just come into lay then. She joined our existing 3 hens, but came from a different place.

Oh yes, sorry I know that, I meant after the visit to the vet. Sorry, I'm not making myself clear again

Don't forget that I'm the one who goes to the vet for everything...

Tell him it would cost alot less to take her to the vet tomorrow compared to if you left it and had to take her once it's Christmas!

hi fenland girl, def sounds like respiratory infection, good luck with her!
Just a note about VermEx - I think it might be useful as a preventative -however, I can find absolutely no evidence that it can remove worms/eggs when an infestation has been identified. So I would use flubenvet to make sure-this is from personal experience!( Prob mine are more prone due to free ranging )Hope this helps! :)

Update - took poorly hen to the vets this morning. He was not too sure what the problem is (they are more used to cats 'n' dogs) but has given her a course of antibiotics. She was as good as gold in the vets! With luck, she'll be on the mend now.
