Gooseberry troubles

Gooseberry troubles

Hello there just got back from my looy and noticed that my gooseberry is dying off on one side only.the variety is invicta.There are no signs of insects and I havn't used any spray in the area. no other plants are affected. Any ideas.and will I have to dig it up and renew it .

no I dont think so ther is no evidence of any leaves being eaten

sounds like sawfly to me, treat with a spray.

Given that Neil says above that no leaves are being eaten, it probably isn't the sawfly.

Could there be damage to the stem on one side only?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I had most of one of my invicta die this year, the buds broke, but never really developed. I put it down to an infection  getting into the trunk from when a big branch broke off last year.  I've cut off the dead bits ad will leave the remaining shoot to develop as it will have a good root system to get it growing strongly. Actually I might take the opportunity to move it as they are planted a bit close which makes picking a nightmare on such pricky goosegogs :(

I think you have hit the nail on the head.Idid a bit of carful digging around the stem/trunk and found that it had cracked right through (must have happened with all the srong winds)So I have completely removed the dying branches clean up the break and painted the exposed cut with a wound paint.
