Strange broad beans
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:48 »
I set my beans off in modules and transplanted outside last November. There were already flowers on when I did this, which I pollinated with a soft brush, as not many natural pollinators about at that time. Now they are nicely tall and the beans on the lower parts of the plant are almost ready for pulling. The wierd part is, there are no beans to be found higher up the plant. There aren't even any flowers which I could have done the pollination with. Any ideas?

Autumn sown broad beans will have stopped flowering by now. My aquadulce certainly stopped weeks ago and I have a great crop of beans this year ready to pick next week. A friend on the same site had a poor crop, but then he used a ifferent variety that aren't recommended for over-wintering. My Spring sown dwarf beans are still flowering big time and beans are just starting to form lower down.
Basically broad beans have a set flowering period of time after which they've done their business, even though they might still be growing tall and green to no good purpose.

I appreciate that, but I grew the same beans last year and they seemed to throw beans much higher up the plant. I don't expect beans all the way to the top. I reckon it was probably the late snows which are the cause of it.
