Too late for beetroot
« on: June 07, 2013, 05:14 »
Can I still plant out beetroot seed direct in the next day or 2 or have I left it too late?

You can plant beetroot through to July, but they may not reach a large size by harvest.  If you want them to eat up, rather than store, this is no problem  :)

Do you mean plant or sow?

We had this recently in another thread. There is quite a difference and I suspect you mean "sow". "Plant" mean putting a plant in the ground, "sow" refers to the seed.

I'm about to to a second sowing, but am not looking for huge beetroot.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

No problem sowing some now. We did last Saturday, and may well do another sowing later in the month.

Apologies, now I've woken up, I can see the reference to seed! Nevertheless, it is still referred to sowing of seed, rather than planting.

Smaller beets are much nicer anyway. Mine have suddenly really come on. I am rather pleased.

Mine always fully leaf up first and then swell the beet, i suppose the leaves give the beet the energy it needs to grow, bit like everything really. I maybe wrong but just for a few seconds i sounded like i knew what i was talking about.

Great.  I'll get a couple of rows in this weekend.  Love beetroot but last year it was rubbish.

The beet will be evident just above the surface.

It's ready for harvest when it's the size you want it to be. I start harvesting mine at golf ball size.
