Strawberry runners
« on: June 06, 2013, 11:11 »
Hi all, my strawberries are throwing a few runners out, what's the best way to harvest them? Should i let them root in where they are and move later or could i put a pot with compost in and train it into that? Thanking you  :D
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how i keep from going under......

Mine throw out onto wood chip paths so I let them root and right at the end of the season I move them by pulling gently and putting into 3 inch pots. I am sure it's probably the wrong way but I didn't lose any so they obviously are not fussy.

I pin the runners down into 6 inch pots with a piece of wire, and cut the runner as soon as they root. They grow in these pots until the spring when I use them to replace the oldest plants in the bed.

I'd do the same as BQ - if you leave them in place there is a lot less watering too.

Yep, leave them to it, dig them up in the autumn.

Less faff.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks all, shall turn a blind eye to their goings-on for now then and leave them to it until the autumn  :)
