First new spuds
« on: June 04, 2013, 01:04 »
I finally cracked and tipped out a bag of first earlies. One seed spud produced just about enough for 2 people for 1 meal, so not the best crop I've had. They were nice though :)

One thing that I've never seen before - all spuds but one were nice clean little first earlies. But there was one spud right in the middle, that initially I thought was the old seed spud but wasn't. It was just odd, not at all like a first early. It was way bigger than all the rest, dark skinned, pocked, ugly and green. It couldn't possibly have been exposed to light because it was right in the middle of all the roots and compost. Every other spud was perfectly clean skinned. What causes that?

It sounds very much like the old seed spud to me, that's the way they go initially.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I did wonder if it was the seed spud, but I've never seen one before that was still solid by the time I lifted the crop.

Yummy I would say seed spud too, you would have at least found the skin of the seed spud surely if that wasn't the seed. We usually find the squashed and flat seed spud skin

If you lift them quite early, you will often find it. Later on they just turn to mush.
