Training outdoor cucumbers
« on: June 03, 2013, 13:49 »
For the first time this year we've grown 7 (Marketmore) outdoor cucumbers and are currently hardening them off in the cold frame. When I put them on the plot in about a week or so will it be possible to train them up a wigwam or train them up some other type of trellis or is it best to let them sprawl along the ground?

Comments and suggestions welcome please. As usual thank you in advance :)

You can train them, but I can't be bothered and just let them sprawl.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Trainer here, can't be having messy plants. I train mine up a triangular wigwam sortof thing, mother was sending it to the tip.  ::) mind you we don't have any this year as ALL mine failed

Wonder if I should just pick up a plant as we eat a fair few in this house

That's fair comment DD. Thanks.

Thanks BQ. I'm sorry to hear that all your cucumber seeds failed this year.

It looks like I can use both methods so I need to make a decision.  :)

I sowed a full packet of 20 seeds thinking that they usually do pretty poorly. All of them germinated and have grown on fine.

I think I'll let them sprawl as usual, save on a bit of weeding ;)

A couple of years ago I put 4 posts on the corners of a trellis and made a kind of trellis table. The cucumbers sprawled over it and kept the fruit dangling down off the ground. It worked really well

If you're coming this way BQ I've got two miniature white plants that have just come through, got first true leaf popping up between the seed leaves.  You can have them!

We usually do go up and down to Bristol all the time but Florence is anti car right now and throw a hissy fit even going to feed the ducks.  ::) hoping it wears off shortly, she wants to walk everywhere and dig everything.
Thanks for the offer though

I put my cukes in big pots on an old table and let them dangle. Keeps them clean. Lettuces can be grown underneath as they don't mind some shade.

I like the idea of training them up a small wooden pallet that is propped up on two staves the other side. The cucumbers then drape over the pallet to keep them clean and out of slugs' way and the vines are trained up and around the propped pallet.

The pallet can be positioned toward the sun to ripen the fruit faster.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have seven plants so I might leave two or three to sprawl and train the others up a wigwam to see how it goes.

My space is limited so I grow mine up half of my Munty frame and they love it. I always get straight cukes and can always find them easily as they dangle from the support lines.
