Potato Harvest
« on: May 31, 2013, 15:05 »
I have been digging my new potatoes, variety Swift, since the 15th of May.
Reasonable yield, very clean, taste good when steamed or steamed & fried. A bit bland if you go over with the cooking time.
Winston is my next early to dig.
What results in other places & other varieties ?

Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and be suspected of knowing nothing than opening it and proving it.

Still too early for most of us  ;)
Even the ones started early in pots in the greenhouse are still too tiny  :nowink:

Well, according to my calculations, my charlottes have been in 13 weeks next weekend. There's an awful lot of foliage. I might have a furtle this week to see if they'll be worth turning out,or if they'll need leaving for another few weeks.

They've certainly had plenty of water this week.

Indeed!   :lol:  ::)
290g is not enough to make them worthwhile is it? wouldn't even pay for the compost in the pot  :nowink:

Hope they'll be better if I leave them for longer  :blink:

Mine are looking pretty disappointing at the moment too. I did Arran Pilot this year, planted on 24th Feb in my tunnel, and they're still tiny at 14 weeks. Last year I was eating them at the beginning of May. Glad I put them in polypots on top of the beds this time, because they're going to have to come out now so I can plant up the beds with the tender stuff.

I've had a couple of meals from the greenhouse ones but yields are well down so I'll just leave them for a few weeks longer. I'd say I'm 3-4 weeks behind normal years, possibly more. The only problem we might have is that many plants will be nowhere near ready to harvest before the dreaded blight rears its head.
