Netting peas and mangetout
« on: May 30, 2013, 14:39 »
I normally keep my peas netted all the time through to harvest to keep the pigeons off. However this year I'm growing mangetout instead. These are currently about 3 ft high in growth. Do I need to keep these netted or are the pigeons less likely to go for the pods?

Do others keep the netting up? I know DD is a big fan of netting his peas!

It's the pods my pigeons go for after they've made it past the tender shoot stage.

Doesn't matter if they're flat or full.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well they're already netted, so I will leave it for now. It's just a pain when it comes to picking.
We have a number of resident pigeons hanging around, so don't know whether to take the chance.

I have a lot of pigeons in my garden, but for some reason they never bother the peas and I never net them. The only thing I've ever known them to attack is red cabbages, but I've got those netted against butterflies anyway.

That could easily be squirrels. They love doing hooligan stuff like that, nature's ASBOs.
