I think they're going to struggle to grow big enough in the time left over summer to form decent sprouts. Maybe buying some plants is the best bet and probably won't cost much more than a packet of seed if you only want a few.

Probably is your last chance, I grew some Groninger sprouts last year that I sowed in mid may and had a great crop in the autumn/ winter.
There are a few that can be sown in may, that would be the ones to look for, but with a few weeks germination, it may just be too late.
We are all a bit late this year, so you might be ok and will then be ok for Christmas, Jan/Feb

Ive recently planted mine outside this week from the greenhouse, groninger  and crispus. Lovely strong plants.

I think your best bet is to get some plants ready to be planted out though

From me, a vote for planting rather than sowing  ;)

I think planting rather than sowing may just win the election!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Me too.  If you haven't sown any try to find some plants in the garden centre.  They might be selling them off cheaply as we are nearing the end spring.

I've got some brussel plants in pots that are only 2-3 inches high and no space yet until the early spuds come out.
What is the latest I can plant them out?
Also I read that they should not go in newly dug ground and as I planning to put them in where the puds come out, do you see a problem with this?

As long as the spuds came out last year and were not this year's earlies it will be okay.  The ground will have settled and compacted over winter.

You can plants brussels out in May and June.

Ah no, I'm talking about taking out this years earlys in a few weeks and planting them in there. Not a good idea?!
What if I make sure I compact / stomp down the soil before planting?

Make sure you tread the earth down firmly and they can go in after early spuds.

This year because of the weather the spuds might be a bit late, but as long as you pot the sprouts on into bigger pots, as and when they need it - they should hold until you can plant them.
