Buying topsoil in grab bags
« on: May 28, 2013, 23:24 »
After a couple of years of growing in under filled raised beds I want to buy some decent topsoil to fill them up a bit.  I have tried manure and compost but I just can't transport enough to make a real difference.  Problem is, every site I look at  will only deliver too a flat level hard surface because they use pallet trucks.  We are on a gravel surface and can only get a medium size lorry round the bend in the drive, and alternative spot is on a slope! Anyone any idea where we might get soil that is delivered without a pallet truck?  We are near j6 of the m25 (Godstone).

Try wickes or a local builders merchant. Many will have a hi ab crane on the lorry and will just crane it off. Either that or buy a tarpalin and have it tipped loose.

Unfortunately I'm not in your area, but I have a local garden centre that has happily delivered cubic metre bags of top soil to me in the past. They don't have any special kit, just a pick up truck that lifts at one end so the bag slides off and falls on the ground :)

Don't you have any small local garden centres that sell this kind of thing?

I tried wickes online but they didn't seem to have grab bags, and our 3 local garden centres only have 60l bags and they are way too expensive. I might try a bit further afield, there are some other garden centres a bit further away.  Loose on a tarpaulin would be fine. Thanks for the help.
If anyone knows a good online supplier who isn't too expensive that would be great in case the garden centres can't help?  The average price for compost and topsoil mixed seems to be £80 for an 850 grab bag.

I would re-check Wicks.
There is one very local to me and all they have are the grab bags, so either there is a major change in delivery containers or the web site is not showing them.

Better still go visit one.

Just looked at the Wicks web site and not a thing resembling the large grab bags on are on their. Think that a trip to vist one or two may be required. Could try a phone call to one or two that are localish.

I just did a quick Google of topsoil Godstone and came up with Top Soil Specialists in Flower Lane, Godstone and MKP Grab Services as the two closest suppliers to you, and there were 7 or 8 more suppliers not too far away. Try giving them a ring and see if they can help. Let us know how you get on.
