Kohl Rabi - watch an enthusiast...
« on: May 28, 2013, 20:17 »
I only started growing Kohl Rabi last year, and I'm hooked!

I was also hurried on by this video here, where the chap is so disarming and positive, and relishes the thought of the crunch and the taste, and the experience..;0)

I love raw kohl rabi  :D  My first batch are growing away well under a net tunnel on the plot, so hoping for a first crop soon.  Also got mooli radish going for more crunch factor  :)

Aww, "Also got mooli radish going for more crunch factor" marvellous, News!

I need some negotiation time with Mrs G on this - we tried Mino Early a few years ago, and they went down like a lead balloon..;0(

I also wanted China Rose too, but they missed the cut too..:0(

It's just his likeable attitude that got me growing it last year, Maxibo!

Glad you enjoyed it!

Plenty of time, Mums, Newshoot said we can carry on into June, so that's my next job - getting another bed ready!

I enjoyed it very much Growster.  Now the thing is, what variety to go for? I've had a look on the real seed website and they have a lovely bluey/purple variety that is quick growing.  But then you can't just order one thing so do I get tempted by the melon seeds I was pondering over?  I don't think its too late for these either judging by their advice and the weather conditions being a few weeks behind.  What have you started?......

Well he looks good on it. I'm trying it for the first time this year, can hardly contain the excitment after watching the video.

His dirty finger marks on his peeled Kohl Rabi reminded me of a couple of lines my OH made up when our grandchildren were small

A bit of dirt dont hurt, but,
A bit of muck makes you chuck.  :D

Its my first time of growing kohl rabi.

Just planted into the beds on sunday, they were quite quick growing from sowing to planting out.

I'm looking forward to tasting them .

I tried two varieties last year - Superschmeltz, which is a big green variety, and Azur Star, which is a small purple/burgundy sort of variety. We didn't like the Superschmeltz but really liked Azur Star. Very quick and easy to grow and fab in a stir fry as a water chestnut substitute.

We've got one of the purple varieties, Max, they're 'Blusta', by T and M!

I'm going to try some more in small pots first as well, as the slugs have had a go at them already..;0)

I've got purple ballot on the go - we both love kohlrabi over in Surbie Towers. Being new to all this I didn't net them last year, and we got 2 of the 8 I planted... :nowink:
