Duck with corns
« on: May 28, 2013, 20:06 »
Hello I recently noticed one of my ducks limping and upon examination it appears she has a large corn with a dark scab-like thing on it. She's not been limping nor do they like being examined overmuch. I bathed in Virkon S and bandaged yet the bandages don't stay on long. What should I do? I have emailed all nearby vets yet the responses are they have no experience with ducks.

I now have a footbath outside the coop so they all have to walk through a dip. I have woodchip on the extensive run and thought that would protect their feet. I've Virkoned that as well.

I don't know if it is infected. I have treated with Virkon S, TCP and smeared some Germolene on and used gold label purple spray for good measure before bandaging. I'm treating as I would a chicken with bumblefoot.

It sounds like bumble foot. Generally straightforward to treat. The infectiev nidus at the centre needs to be removed if this is what it is.

Most vets have very little experience of animals like ducks so it can be hard to find one who will look at them. Where abouts in the Midlands are you? There are usually vets in the more rural are who are prepared to have a look. There is also a specialist avian vet in Knutsford I think. I have never used them but a friend of mine swears by them and apparently they are often happy to give advice to less experienced vets.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I'm on the edge of Birmingham. Emailed another half dozen vets yesterday, still awaiting replies.

The other ducks are getting tell-tale marks on their feet now. Does one always need to remove the infected centre? I read I might need to but felt perhaps it's better for a vet to do it, though I could have a go. I'd have to hold the duck in Epsom salts for 20 minutes to soften the corn, desensitise the area then nick the scab with a modeller's knife, clearing then draining?

I've made a neoprene shoe which it has been wearing to protect it. She's been walking fine since I first treated it two days ago.

Often I let my ducks out of the run and I've noticed a badly limping wild duck nearby which I think might have infected my birds.

Thanks, I've finally found a vet that has some experience with ducks though I will try yours in future.

I carefully followed instructions gleaned online and the several books I have and performed some minor surgery with no pus forthcoming. I probably didn't lop off enough scab. The duck continues to walk around fine, though with a bandage on. I have noticed a lot more corns/bumbles appearing despite the treatment the ducks are getting.

My vet is not actually a poultry specialist but keeps poultry himself and so is very good with our chickens. It's Sutton Coldfield - don't know if you are north or south B'Ham.
Hens - Clara (Bluebell) & little newbies Martha (Black Sussex) & Dora (Speckled Maran)
RIP Margot, Geraldine, Hettie,  Ruby & Tilly :(
Cats - Herbie (LH black moggy) Louie (Seal Point Ragdoll) Jazzi (Dilute Torbie) Peggy (g&w stray)
RIP Ollie (Seal Point Ragdoll) :(

I found a vet that charged £90 to remove the infected growth and supply me with hibiscrub for my other ducks and baytril for the one they operated on.

All their feet have much improved but there are still little round marks on a few. I had my ducks when they were 4 months old and they do not like being handled and cry blooming murder when they see me now. It has been quite an ordeal. They do seem to go silent when I clean their feet though but I'm unsure if this is because they secretly enjoy it or it's sullen resentment.

It's gone on for two weeks and they've been confined to the coop - with very occasional forays into the run. I've had to keep them on straw as that's easier on their feet but now I'm thinking of letting them out.

Despite their reluctance I shall be checking them over more frequently in future.

I've wondered about using stockholm tar on their feet but I'm unsure. If anyone has any further advice or information regarding bumblefoot and ducks I'd be happy to hear it. Thanks again to everyone that helped.
