Another volunteer tayty question.
« on: May 27, 2013, 19:07 »
I've just been nankling around in my broad bean patch (6" pods on some now), and come across a volunteer desiree from last year. I've had one or two in other beds from last year, but I've just pulled 'em up and there's been very little on the end of the foliage. This one was different. A smallish bit of foliage but a  nice sized, solid, tayty on the end of it. Deep down too. Bit of scab, but looking quite fit. The question is: has it been lurking there all winter at the size it is now, or was it smaller and grown? Or could it have shot from a smaller tuber which has since departed? It seems to have survived incredibly well if has just survived in the condition it was left in last year. Here's a piccy at the side of a large egg.

Just survived at that size, because it was deep enough to miss the frosts  ;) Slugs don't go for the red spuds much so it escaped them as well  :D

In the old days they were stored in an earth clamp - so it's nothing new  ;)
