leek leaves

hi,

does anybody know of a leek variety that produces really long leaves, a couple of ft long?

my uncle was telling me, him and his dad had some many years ago. just wondering if its possible or if they did something wrong .

Why would you want leaves a couple of feet long, I don't eat all the way up, although I do use a fair bit of green. Just curious  ???

Shaun, I think you could say that a fully grown leek could make 2' easily from root to leaf end, as long as it had been blanched properly, but the leaves beyond the joined up section are useless of course!

Interesting point though, as someone once thought it correct to use them!

As BQ says, some of the green is very acceptable, but when they've been flapping about and are all coarse and dirty, they really need binning!

I grew this one a few years ago. The variety is Winter Giant.

It was a good year for leeks and this was the best of the crop. I was going to keep it for seed but Mrs. S.C. needed something for a pot of soup  ;)

Maybe the Giant Bulgarian Leek at the bottom of this page could produce really long leaves (and stems!):

ive stared the bulgarian giant leeks awhile ago but they are still like grass, maybe they will pick up.

Shaun, with the greatest respect, you have now started a thread which will run and run, because DD will claim that all his are the size of a pencil (you'll hear that word a squillion times from now on), and everyone else will say there's are the size of Biro refills!

I wish they wouldn't do this, but they do, and my leek grass, like yours, will still attain the size of enormosity..;0)

In fact, as an old twit here, I'll post another one, and start it all off just for fun...!
