Growing Squash on Manure?
« on: May 21, 2013, 20:14 »
I'm sure I've read somewhere, though I may have dreamt it, that you can grow squash/courgettes on top of your manure heap and it doesn't have to be particularly well rotted either.  Is this true or did I indeed dream it?! Cheers! x

Yes, you can grow it on a pile of manure - not sure if they'd appreciate really fresh stuff though

Thanks M-O-S! I thought I'd read it somewhere and not dreamt it!  The reason I ask is we've a small pile of manure on our plot that has started to rot - it doesn't smell 'manury' at all but you still see where it came from, if you know what I mean  :).  I have been kindly given several different types of winter squash seeds through a seed swap on this site.  I was thinking we could put the manure on an area of our plot now and have a lovely winter squash bed.  :D

Agree with @mumofstig that they may not like it too fresh - could you create a large planting hole in the pile, fill with compost and then plant in that to give the roots something less rich to get started in while the manure gets a bit less 'hot'?

On a recent thread a lot of people have said they grow curcubits on their compost heap, and have great results....

I'm going to throw something on there soon :)
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Thanks for advice! (Yet again!  :))  Its a really small pile of horse manure that we picked up in bags as it was free.  Its been covered and rotting down for about 2 months now and was starting to rot when we got it.  It won't really go very far which was why I was thinking of covering/digging in a smallish area on the plot for winter squash. I think I might give it a whirl.  :D.  I haven't planted the squash seeds yet - must add to 'to do' list for weekend.

I've got a hot bed going for pumpkins later- grew some lovely stuff on semi rotted kitchen & horse stuff last year, but as with everyone, beware the warm smelly stuff  little roots don't like it.

We had a new steaming pile delivered today  :D I was first in so to speak!

I grew them last year on or in a darlec on top of fresh chicken litter, I put a hole with a small amount of compost and in went the hundred weight pumpkin.

It went mad.

Aww thanks guys!  See, I knew I'd read about this, if only I could remember where  ???.  May have been in a Joy Larkcom book but I'll be blowed if I can find it.  It's been driving me mad looking for it in my books.  But ask on here and find what you need..... :D
