Euphorbia - is it too late to sow seeds?
« on: May 21, 2013, 13:57 »
Hi,

realised that i need euphorbia in my garden - question is if it is too late to start from seed? Sarah Raven sells seedlings but very expensive compared to the price of a packet of seeds.

Any views please? I can sow and keep inside.

Kind regards,

Caroline

They work well from cuttings and now is the right sort of time to do it, if you know anyone who might donate. :)

Well, there are a few plants in an alleyway on the way to work, I could liberate a few cuttings from there but it feels a bit naughty. Maybe I will take an aquilegia to make up for it! I've just been to the garden centre and they are £7 for a small plant and £10 for a large plant!!!

A few cuttings liberated - silly question, but I assume I take the cuttings from the base of the plant where there are new shoots or is it higher up? I can't find any guidance on the internet.

Thanks,

Caroline

There are many different varieties of Euphorbia but RHS advice, which I like to follow, says this:

Quote
Propagation

  • Take cuttings early in the season when growth of the stem is taking place
  • Use young basal shoots and do not remove too many leaves as this will weaken the cutting and make handling difficult without getting the irritant latex on your hands
  • Dip cut surfaces in charcoal or lukewarm water to prevent bleeding

If you happen to know which variety you have, it might be covered in its own RHS article.
